A Brief History

The Amputee Association of Sydney Inc. was founded in January 1985 by a small group of like-minded amputees.  From this small beginning the organization has grown and successfully assisted new amputees with peer support, supplying information and comfort.

Social events are regularly organized for members, families and friends.

Celebrating 25 years of supporting amputees

There will be a number of events held throughout this year to celebrate the 25th year of the Amputee Association of Sydney.

All events will be posted on the events page as well as published in the Amputee Journal and sent by email to those who are registered to receive updates.

Congratulations to all members and volunteers past and present for helping us to achieve this milestone.

Limbs from Leftovers

Last year I met Rob Buchanan, an expatriate Australian living in New Zealand who has established the not-for-profit charity Mobility Equipment for the Needs of the Disabled (MEND).  This charity carries out wonderful work in third world countries such as Nepal, Nigeria, India and Fiji for disabled people, especially amputees, and has clinics in these countries.
We have been assisting Rob by collecting unwanted prosthetics from members and with the assistance of apc Prosthetics will be shipping many unwanted but valuable prosthetic components to Rob's clinics.  Our latest effort has been to ship 45 Kgs of parts to Northern Nigeria where for the first time an amputee clinic will be established.  Past member Alan Peterson and our Association paid the freight charge.  Thanks Alan.
Personally I think Rob's efforts have been huge as he spends many months each year in his self-built clinics in far off countries, manufactures prostheses locally at greatly reduced cost and manages to keep in touch using email and Skype.
For further information on Rob's work with disabled people in these underprivileged countries check Mend's website: www.mendnz.com.
If you have unwanted prosthetics hidden away in the back of a wardrobe please think about recycling these items through MEND and contact our office on (02) 9890 0949 or 1800 810 969. Thanks. Ed.

02/09/10 - Limb components have arrived in Maiduguri,
