Phantom Limb Pain Symposium - Darling Harbour - 2nd November 2011
Our Phantom Limb Pain Symposium was a resounding success.
I was delighted with the attendance (80), the venue (L'Aqua at
Cockle Bay), the 3 speakers Professors Phil Siddall and
Lorimer Moseley and Dr. Chris Hayes. Dr. Lee Laycock carried out
his chairmanship admirably.
Due to the complex nature of Phantom Limb Pain a cure is still on
the horizon but from the feedback I've received most of us gained
a lot more knowledge than we expected.
My gratitude goes to all those involved and let's hope we are a little
closer to a cure.

Every Australian Counts - NDIS Inquiry
Every Australian Counts!!
NDIS - revolutionising disability services
"All Australians would benefit from the scheme because
disability can affect anyone, anytime. Everyone will benefit
from building a more inclusive, more diverse community." The
current situation is inequitable - people receive different levels
of support depending on how, when and where their disability
was acquired. A National Disability Insurance Scheme would
provide people with a disability and their families and carers
with the regular care, support, therapy and equipment they
need. As a Medicare-type scheme, it would provide a secure
and consistent pool of funds for these services and support.
We need your support to make the NDIS a reallity. Join the
campaign at www.everyaustraliancounts.com.au, follow us on

Your Voice has an Impact
In July 2011, the Australian Government released information
explaining how households will be compensated for any cost of living
increases resulting from pricing carbon. The package includes the
Essential Medical Equipment Payment, which will be paid at a rate of
$140 per year. This payment is in addition to increases to the
Disability Support Pension and is available to concession card holders
who have a recognised medical condition that requires high energy use.
In April 2011, the Physical Disability Council of NSW (PDCN) and the
Public Interest Advocacy Centre (PIAC) Energy + Water Consumers'
Advocacy Program spoke to a group of people with physical disability
about their energy use. People told us they were concerned about
rising electricity costs. In some cases these concerns were really
strong because their physical conditions meant that they relied heavily
on electricity to help them with the essentials of daily life.
A week after the focus group, PIAC met with the Australian
Parliamentary Secretary for Energy Efficiency, the Hon Mark Dreyfus,
to discuss the design of the household assistance package being
developed to help people manage costs resulting from pricing carbon.
During that meeting, PIAC recommended that household assistance
include additional financial help for people who have serious medical
conditions. PIAC explained that this is important because serious
medical conditions often mean that people have higher electricity
requirements that can not be reduced.
PDCN and PIAC would like to thank all those who took part in the
recent focus group, as well as those who have filled out the
questionnaire on energy use that is currently being circulated.
Our policy and advocacy work is much stronger when it is based on
everyday experiences of people. We continue to use the information
you share with us as we work toward fairer access to electricity as an
essential service.
If you haven't filled out the energy use questionnaire and you would
like to, please go to http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/BXYBKBR
or call PDCN on (02) 9552 1606 and a copy can be mailed to you.
